| Academic Focus Sacred Heart's academic focus is rooted in the belief that it is important to educate the whole child to become the best person he or she can be. We teach traditional academic disciplines in ways that recognize individual differences. Academic Standards Our excellent academic standards, which encompass grades Pre-K through 8th, are affirmed by our 1994 accreditation by the Commission on Elementary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Sacred Heart adheres to Archdiocesan Curriculum Guidelines and State requirements. Students receive a strong foundation in the basic learning skills which are reinforced by the integration of computers in the curriculum through writing and appropriate math and science materials. Windows on Science as well as computer software programs enhance our curriculum. Students also participate in educational field trips, which are incorporated into subject curriculum. Awards Sacred Heart School offers to eligible students scholarships to: Sts. John Neumann & Maria Goretti HS Roman Catholic West Catholic St. Joseph's Prep HS Merion Mercy Academy Youth Recognition Awards by the South Philadelphia Review, Student of the Month, Critic’s Choice Awards, Subject & Effort Awards, and Perfect Attendance Certificates. Beyond the 3R's Students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities such as altar servers, the student council, speech club, academic bowls, mathletes, essay, art, math and geography competitions. In addition, students participate in, the Future City Engineering Contest, Computer Quiz Bowl and CWV Spelling Bee, Classroom Plus, math game of Twenty-Four, as well as, participating in team sports, such as boys and girls basketball, girls softball and boys baseball, and girls volleyball, which are sponsored by The Sacred Heart Athletic Association. Catholic Values All students participate in prayers, religion class, and paraliturgies. Grades Pre-K to 8th students attend Mass once a month, Ash Wednesday, May Procession, special feasts, opening and closing exercises of school. Parent meetings for sacramental preparation are held during the year. Students are involved with community service projects. Altar servers - Grades 5-8, participate during class Masses and Sunday liturgies. Students actively partake in Stations of the Cross and Benediction. Doors Opened Since our doors opened on January 9, 1893, Sacred Heart School has been respected for its tradition of academic excellence in a caring, secure and disciplined environment. It has become an integral part of the Parish Community often serving generations of the same family. Facilities Our facilities include a well-maintained four-story building with classrooms that are attractive, spacious and inviting. There is a computerized Internet accessible library, Internet accessible computer lab, CAI lab, a prayer room, and a cafeteria with a hot lunch program. In addition, there is an art/science/technology room which provides the students with "hands-on" experience. Each classroom is wireless with Internet accessibility. A cart containing a Laptop and a LCD projector can be used in the individual classrooms. A digital camera enhances our students and activities. Teachers and students use Laptops and Palm Pilots. Faculty Sacred Heart's dedicated faculty includes Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, who have been a driving force at Sacred Heart since its very first day, and a committed, caring lay faculty. Gift of God At Sacred Heart, we believe that each child is a unique, unrepeatable gift of God and we encourage each child to become Christ-centered by following the Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Precepts of the Church. Home and School The Sacred Heart Home and School Association encourages the active participation of parents through fundraising and attendance of the Home and School meetings. Fund raisers such as, candy sales, pizza kits, Santa's Secret Shop, cookie dough, and pie sales have provided Sacred Heart with new windows, new student desks and chairs, radiator covers, maps and globes, textbooks, and trade books. Student Services Sacred Heart School provides Sylvan math and Title 1 reading remediation; Sylvan counseling, testing services, math and reading instructions; speech and language development, and the Merit Program which lends assistance to teachers in the Integrated Language Arts. Students that qualify, receive special remediation in reading and math. Students receive Religious Enrichment in our prayer room weekly. A Philadelphia School District nurse is on staff one day each week. |
